Description: This recently described species has been found only on Gunung Telong near the northern tip of Sumatera, where it grows on the open volcanic slopes amongst ferns and rhododendrons. The pitchers of N. lavicola are considerably variable in colour, ranging from yellowish green to dark brownish black, often with a striped peristome. Occasionally some plants will have spotted pitchers. Nepenthes lavicola appears to be related to N. spectabilis, and plants exhibiting intermediate characteristics have been found between the ranges of these species.
Cultivation recommendations: Requires cool humid conditions as for other highland species. This species seems to prefer very bright light in cultivation.
