The most exotic Sarracenia by far is Sarracenia psittacina: it does not grow upwards but sideways. New pitchers stack up on top of the old ones. Thanks to the curve at the tip of the pitcher it does not need a lid, because rainwater cannot fall into it. The trapping mechanism works in the same way as Darlingtonia californica. Small ‘windows’ let in light, so that insects become disoriented and cannot find a way out.
